Reversing Valve Failure
The reversing valve switches the system between cooling and heating modes. If it's stuck or faulty, the system stays in cooling mode even when set to heat.

Many mini-splits are heat pumps that both cool and heat. If yours isn't producing warm air in heating mode, the cause could be a defrost cycle issue, a reversing valve problem, or a refrigerant shortage.

Most mini-split systems installed in Phoenix are heat pumps, meaning they can both cool and heat your space. While we're known for our extreme summers, Phoenix winters can still drop into the 30s and 40s, and a mini-split that won't heat leaves you reaching for space heaters — which are far less efficient and more expensive to run.
Here's the important thing to know: if your mini-split cools fine but won't heat, the problem is almost always in the components that switch the system between modes. The reversing valve redirects refrigerant flow to change from cooling to heating. Defrost sensors and control boards manage frost buildup on the outdoor coil during heating. When any of these components fail, the system gets stuck — usually in cooling mode.
Phoenix's mild winters are actually ideal for heat pump performance. Most mini-splits heat efficiently down to 15–20°F, well below our coldest temperatures. So if your unit isn't heating, it's not because it's too cold outside — there's a mechanical or electrical issue that needs professional diagnosis. The good news is that reversing valves, defrost sensors, and other heating-mode components can typically be repaired or replaced without replacing the entire system.

If you're experiencing mini-split not heating, you'll typically notice one or more of the following:
COMFORT, EXPLAINED

Understanding the root cause is the first step toward fixing it. Here are the most common reasons we see mini-split not heating in mini-split systems across the Phoenix Valley:

The reversing valve switches the system between cooling and heating modes. If it's stuck or faulty, the system stays in cooling mode even when set to heat.

Low refrigerant charge reduces the system's ability to extract heat from outdoor air, resulting in weak or no heating performance.

In heating mode, frost can build up on the outdoor coil. The system periodically defrosts. If the defrost sensor or control board malfunctions, the unit may stay in defrost too long or not defrost properly.

Standard mini-split heat pumps lose efficiency as outdoor temperatures drop. In extreme cold, some systems can't extract enough heat. However, most Phoenix winters are mild enough for adequate heating.

Temperature sensors that monitor the outdoor coil can fail, causing the system to enter defrost mode at the wrong times or fail to defrost when needed.

A dirty outdoor coil restricts the system's ability to absorb heat from outside air, reducing heating capacity.

Before calling a technician, there are a few safe and simple checks you can do yourself. These won't fix every problem, but they rule out the easy stuff — and they're free:
Safety note: Do not open the unit or attempt electrical or refrigerant repairs yourself — those require a licensed professional.
COMFORT, EXPLAINED

When you call Core Comfort HVAC, our licensed technicians will diagnose the exact cause and recommend the right fix. Here's how we approach mini-split not heating:

We test the reversing valve's solenoid and valve operation, and replace it if the system can't switch to heating mode.

We locate and repair leaks, then recharge the system to restore full heating capacity.

We test the defrost sensor, defrost control board, and defrost heater, replacing faulty components to restore proper defrost cycling.

We clean the outdoor coil to restore heat absorption capacity, improving heating performance.

We test all temperature sensors for proper resistance values and calibration, replacing any that are out of spec.

We evaluate whether your system is properly sized for heating your space, especially if it's a room addition, garage, or workshop.

If your mini-split is set to heat mode but blowing cold air for more than 15 minutes, or if it repeatedly enters defrost mode and never produces warm air, call us. Reversing valve failures and defrost system issues require professional diagnosis and repair.
COMFORT, EXPLAINED
Yes. Phoenix's mild winters are ideal for mini-split heat pumps. Most systems work efficiently down to about 15–20°F, well below Phoenix's coldest temperatures. If your system isn't heating, there's likely a mechanical issue, not a temperature limitation.
This is the defrost cycle — a normal function. In heating mode, frost builds on the outdoor coil. The system temporarily switches to cooling mode to melt the frost, then returns to heating. If defrost cycles are too frequent or too long, there's a sensor or control issue.
Usually yes. If cooling works but heating doesn't, the problem is typically the reversing valve, a defrost component, or a sensor — all of which can be repaired or replaced without replacing the entire system.
